1 Timothy 2:9 encourages women to dress in respectable apparel

HAMTRAMCK, MI — On the December 1971 episode of the BBC TV program Parkinson, legendary professional heavyweight boxing champion, Muhammad Ali, was asked why he had an issue with women wearing miniskirts. Ali gave the following answer.

“If you go to Saudi Arabia, and tell a woman to put on a mini skirt, they will be fined and locked up. I have a wife and [if] she’s walking around with a skirt up to here and then what’s happening? Well, why do I want everybody to see her? I mean people looking... and they lusting for her.”

By today's standards, the miniskirts of the late-1960s and early 1970s are tame in comparison to the way women dress on the streets of America, but it feels like we've reached a tipping point.

Kenyan author Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o once stated that the "condition of women in a nation is the real measure of its progress." America has historically been a Christian nation, and as believers, we have been given freedom through Jesus Christ. That means we don't fine women and lock them up for wearing a short dress.

However, Galatians 5:13, from the Bible, states: "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh." 1 Timothy 2:9 encourages women to dress in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control. American culture promotes the opposite.

According to Pew Research, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the U.S., with estimates suggesting it could become the second-largest religion by the turn of the century. Immigration plays a large part, but so do traditional values, like marriage and having children. The majority of American women have given up on both of those... and that's why we're losing.
