About Us
America's first Black media company.
Founded in November 1942 by trailblazing publisher John H. Johnson of Johnson Publishing Company, The Negro Digest, later renamed Black World, was a magazine for the African-American market that was first published locally in Chicago.
The magazine was similar to the Reader's Digest, but aimed to cover positive stories about the African-American community. The Negro Digest ceased publication in 1951 as Johnson's new magazines, EBONY and JET gained popularity, but it returned in 1961. In 1970, Negro Digest was renamed Black World and continued to appear until April 1976.
Award-winning filmmaker and veteran online publisher Bayer Mack re-launched the NEGRO DIGEST ™ brand in January 2021 as "the only magazine for Black men in America" to provide a space for African-American men to connect, discuss challenges, and build camaraderie.
