Are Non-Black Women Better for Successful Black Men?

LOS ANGELES, CA— Former NBA guard Gilbert Arenas is weighing in on interracial relationships, arguing that surroundings and upbringing help explain why some successful Black men date women outside their race.
Speaking on “We Said What We Said” with Melli Monaco and Nick Young, Arenas responded to a debate involving Dr. Umar Johnson and Nick Cannon over whether successful Black men should marry within their community.
Arenas suggested that changing neighborhoods and social circles can change whom men meet. In his view, dating outside the Black community does not automatically mean rejecting it.
He also argued that Black girls are often raised to prioritize independence, which he believes can create friction with equally independent men. Rather than building together, he suggested, couples may compete over their autonomy.
Arenas described women from other backgrounds as more “docile” and “more compatible” with successful men, presenting those traits as reasons some relationships feel easier.
However, the report offered no supporting research for his sweeping claims about women’s upbringing or behavior.
The discussion raises a larger question: What makes a lasting partnership? Financial success, shared goals, communication and mutual respect deserve consideration. Treating race as a shortcut for compatibility risks overlooking the individual qualities that sustain relationships.

In our opinion, true success is a Black man with options who still chooses a Black woman. Clair Huxtable remains the standard: intelligent, accomplished, loving and committed to building alongside her husband. Women like her are still out there—even if they’re harder to find.
