VIENNA, VA — Warren Thompson, 67, turned an entrepreneurial childhood in Windsor, Virginia, into a hospitality empire valued by Forbes at $750 million. His company, Thompson Hospitality, feeds corporate workers, hospital patients and college students while operating a growing restaurant portfolio.
The son of two educators, Thompson started mowing lawns and selling produce as a teenager. At 16, he purchased his father’s hog business, using its proceeds to help finance college. He earned a managerial economics degree from Hampden-Sydney College in 1981 and an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business in 1983.
After nine years at Marriott, Thompson launched his company in 1992 with $100,000 of personal savings and financing to acquire Bob’s Big Boy restaurants. When conversions to Shoney’s disappointed, he accelerated plans to enter contract foodservice, a pivot that transformed the business.
A 1997 partnership with Compass Group helped expand his reach. Today, the company serves major corporate clients and 18 historically Black colleges and universities, including Hampton and Norfolk State. It also owns approximately 70 restaurants.
Forbes reports Thompson retains full ownership, with company revenue projected to reach $1 billion in 2026. His success illustrates how education, adaptability and ownership can turn early setbacks into enduring wealth and opportunity for others.
