WASHINGTON, DC— In October 1947, NEGRO DIGEST published sociologist Horace R. Cayton’s “America’s 10 Best Cities for Negroes,” examining where Black Americans could build better lives during the Second Great Migration. The ten metropolitan areas were Chicago, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle, San Francisco–Oakland, and Minneapolis–St. Paul. As families sought opportunity beyond the segregated South, choosing where to live carried enormous stakes: access to employment, education, homeownership, and the freedom to pursue their ambitions.
Nearly eight decades later, that question remains relevant for professional Black men. A strong salary matters, but so do career advancement, business opportunities, housing affordability, and a community where success can take root. Revisiting Cayton’s inquiry for a new generation, we examine ten cities to consider in 2026–27—and what makes each a promising place to build a career, accumulate wealth, and establish a fulfilling life.
