AUSTIN, TX —After watching Netflix’s GTA 6 reveal, our biggest takeaway is simple: this looks like The Sims with guns and hair weave.
First, the obvious: the game is absolutely gorgeous. Vice City is ridiculously detailed, crowded and alive. Rockstar has built an open world that looks almost photorealistic.
But culturally, it already feels tired.
When the white protagonist walks into a Black dope spot, my first thought was that he would have been called “cracker” at least two or three times before reaching the back room. Instead, everything feels strangely sanitized. For a franchise once famous for offending everybody, this GTA feels almost PG-13.
And ghetto culture as entertainment has simply become boring. We’ve consumed the drugs, guns, strip clubs, scammers, rappers and dysfunctional-neighborhood aesthetic for decades.
When the protagonists approach the dope spot, a black woman is depicted as heavyset and deliberately unkempt-looking, with a yellow crop top and very tight, undersized athletic shorts emphasizing her size rather than flattering it. Her tattoos, hair, jewelry, clothing, and posture contribute to a deliberately rough, somewhat slovenly presentation. All of the black men look like menacing tattooed apes or some variation of a ghetto Sideshow Bob or SpotemGottem.
There’s increasingly little rebellious about it.
Then there’s Lucia. Lucia works because she’s a Latina and with a phat digital ass. If essentially the same character were White, Black, Asian or anything else, I suspect a lot of people currently infatuated with her would recognize her as an irritating girl boss.
The obsession with her is already corny.
Maybe the finished game proves us wrong. But right now, GTA 6 looks like an extraordinarily beautiful technical achievement wrapped around an increasingly exhausted cultural fantasy.
It’s The Sims with guns and hair weave.
