PASADENA, CA — Comedian Deon Cole took his chitlin circuit humor to a new low at the 57th Annual NAACP Image Awards with his mock prayer for rapper Nicki Minaj.
Cole is reportedly receiving death threats from Ms. Minaj's fans; as well, supporters of president Donald Trump, who Cole also took shots at.
Clarence Conaway discusses Cole's hosting of the NAACP Image Awards and his joke targeting Nicki Minaj. He argues that the acceptance of Cole's joke stems from Minaj's political alignment with the right, suggesting that similar jokes about black women on the left would be deemed unacceptable
Conaway highlights the perceived decline in "Black Excellence" as showcased by the NAACP Image Awards. He contrasts the current state with past awards from the 1990s and early 2000s, highlighting a shift from genuine elegance, class, and reverence for God to a more casual and less dignified presentation.
